Chaga, or Inonotus Obliquus, is a parasitic fungi that grows almost exclusively on Birch trees, in Canada, Northern Europe, and Siberia. It has been used as a medicine for at least 5000 years.
A 19th century explorer recorded that Chaga was locally known to the indigenous of an area as ‘the mushroom of immortality’ – which is what Reishi is commonly called – and credited Chaga with saving his life when he was stranded for a harsh period at one point.
It is dark, hard, and resembles charred fire wood on the outside, with an almost golden-brown interior, similar to some black licorice treats.
It is often made into tea when it is whole, and as a capsule or tonic when ground as a power or extract.
