- Eat More Fats. Fats forms the skin’s natural barrier against dry skin, by preventing the natural evaporation of water or fluid in the skin. As oil and water don’t mix, the oils of the skin prevent the skin’s moisture from rising to the surface where it is exposed to the air and naturally evaporates. Think of a spill or moisture in a room or outside – it naturally disappears (evaporates) eventually. This is doubly so for hot areas or areas exposed to the sun. The oils of the skin can be likened to shade cast by a tree, or an enclosed room or cool area, which slows or prevents the evaporation of the water, retaining a hydrated, supple, and dewy skin. Good fats to eat for this are saturated fats like in beef or lamb and dairy, as well as coconut oil and cocoa butter (or cacao & dark chocolate), and monounsaturated fats like in olive oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter, and dairy.
